«Biotechnology» – Thematic Priority

The main contents of 2-d Thematic Priority in FP7 Programme of EC «Food, Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, and Biotechnology» is formulated on the basis of European Conception of «Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy», КВВЕ).

«Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy» (KBBE)

The aim is to promote European leading and innovative knowledge to increase productivity and competitiveness and improve our quality of life, while protecting our environment and social model.
Under FP7 participation from non EU countries, SMEs and civil society organizations is supported and encouraged through all areas of our theme.
Theme 2 “Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology” is built around three major ”activities”:

1. Sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forest and aquatic environments;
2. Fork to farm: Food (including seafood), health and well-being;
3. Life sciences, biotechnology and biochemistry for sustainable non-food products and processes

KBBE will play an important role in a global economy, where knowledge is the best way to increase productivity and competitiveness and improve our quality of life, while protecting our environment and social model. It is a sector estimated to be worth more than € 1.5 trillion per year.

KBBE addresses the following needs:

growing demand for safer, healthier, higher quality food;
sustainable use and production of renewable bio-resources;
increasing risk of epizootic and zoonotic diseases and food related disorders;
sustainability and security of agricultural, aquaculture and fisheries production;
increasing demand for high quality food, taking into account animal welfare and rural

and coastal contexts and response to specific dietary needs of consumers.

The Work Programme for 'Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology' research in FP7 for 2008 is available for downloading on «Cordis» website.
